ACCOMMODATIONS
 | |
| Typical
Villa Rooms |
- We
have meticulously selected 3-star or equivalent hotels and villas for our trips.
The criteria are simple: location and comfort.
- Location
refers to cappuccino aromas, splendid views and sounds of church bells (or in
Cortonaroosters) right outside your window. You will not be staying in isolated
"burbs" with the other gigantic tour groups.
- Comfort
refers to cleanliness, AC and heat. Keep in mind most Italians prefer an open
window and ocean breeze to centralized air. In addition, some of the older hotels
(in the center of town where we like to stay) can occasionally have the aches
a 200 year old building would expect to have. Also, since villas and hotels are
usually family-run, you may be responsible for carrying your own bag to the fourth
floor (another reason to pack light.)
- All
accommodations have been personally viewed by Dolce Vita Adventures.
Home
is where you choose it to be.Anonymous

MEALS

Clean Plate Club |
- The
glorious food is certain to be one of the main reasons for visiting Italy! We
will always highlight the local/regional cuisine and try to share a group meal
in each of the different towns we visit. We will prepare you in regards to the
local specialties and we hope you'll be as adventuresome as possible. This is
truly the "never a complaint" department. With prior notice, we will
accommodate all special dietary requirements.
- Breakfast
is always included, as well as any Lunch or Dinners, indicated with an L or D
on the itinerary. We will also have endless opportunities to visit local deli
and produce stores for figs, blood oranges and panini con mozzarella!
TRANSPORTATION

| Plan
A | Plan
B |
- Logistics
can be the most important variable of any adventure. Dolce Vita will provide all
transportation in regards to scheduled activities. We will use planes, buses,
trains, ferries, fishing boats, even chairlifts to get us deep into Italy. However,
there are forces beyond our control (wind cautions boat ride, strike changes train
schedule, traffic delays arrival...). In those cases, rely on your tour director
to have a back-up plan. Obviously, punctuality and flexibility on everyone's part
will be required to move a group of 20 independent minds in the same direction.
With your cooperation, Dolce Vita will make sure you get where you need to be
as efficiently and as safely as possible.
- Dolce
Vita Adventures will be happy to assist you throughout your trip with any additional
personal excursions/requests (i.e. trip extensions, car rentals, taxi calls, etc.)
- Please
contact us directly for individualized itineraries apart from our scheduled adventures.
Happiness
is not only a place to travel to, it's a way of getting there.Anonymous

TELEPHONES
- Long
distance calling cards from your provider may work, but sometimes there's difficulty/confusion
in dialing even the initial access number from an Italian public phone.
- It is a better
(and much cheaper) idea to simply purchase an Italian phone card from the newsstand
kiosks or Italian tobacco shop "Tabacchi" (equivalent to our 7-11 in
purpose and popularity, but much smaller.)
- Don't
forget you will receive a letter with all hotel/villa addresses and phone numbers
before you depart. Make copies to leave behind with your friends and/or family
and carry one copy with you throughout your trip (in your money belt). You will
also receive your tour director's cell phone number that can be reached by anyone
in the US or by you while on your travels in Italy.
- To call the US from
Italy:
- dial
001 + area code + number
- To
call Italy from the US:
- dial
011 + 39 (Italy) + area code w/ zero plus number or straight cell number

PACKING
 |
- Mantra:
Pack light and wash it at night.
- Whatever
you forget, you can buy it there.
- Pack
only what you can carry (in one trip). Some of the trips will necessitate only
carry-ons as time searching for luggage at an airport is time better spent in
a vineyard.
- Pack
comfortable, tasteful clothes that can be layered. Fall adventurers should always
include a hat and scarf. Spring/Summer adventurers should always have their bathing
suit handy.
- Carry
a backpack for daily snacks, water bottles, cameras and guidebook pages/maps.
- Think
in terms of what you can live without for a few days instead of what would be
fun to have.
- Toiletry
bags that hang on hooks work best in hotel bathrooms.
- Minimize
everythinginstead of the entire address book, take only a sheet with the
necessary postcard-people's addresses. Take 2-3 travel-sized soaps and toothpaste
and discard them as you use them. Pack a small plastic squeeze bottle of multipurpose
soap for personal or laundry use. Copy only the necessary pages out of your guidebooks,
staple them together and throw them away when finished (the book at home will
help when your photos are developed.)
- If
your bag is full on the way there, it'll burst on the way back. Pack an extra
empty bag for souvenirs/purchases for your return.
- Leave
your worries and troubles at home.

WEATHER

Assisi: Pick Up Game |
- Italy usually
has a milder climate than Northern VA/DC area. The difference is in their use
of AC/heat indoors. They simply don't care to use it as much as we do. So inside
sometimes feels like outside.
- Spring
is warm in the daytime, but chilly evenings and rain showers are normal. Summers
are very hot. Fall is warm through October (many still swim in Sicily), however
jackets are advisable for evening.
- Update
your weather info before you go, but remember meteorologists play the same dice
game, whether here or there.
HEALTH

A Walk to Town |
- To
really enjoy Italy we have to get out of the bus, walk the cobblestone streets,
push open bronze cathedral doors, climb up vineyards and dive into the turquoise
waters of Capri. PLEASE START A SERIOUS WALKING REGIMENT BEFORE THE TRIP. Please
notify the tour director of any physical challenges before the excursion begins.
- If
you take prescription medicine, take it in its original container, know the generic
namenot just the brand name, in case it needs to be replaced. It would be
wise to have a copy of all prescribed medications you are taking, and their purpose,
in your luggage. There is always at least one pharmacy open at night.
- Dolce Vita
Adventures will need medical emergency contact information and signed release
forms before departure.
- In
case of emergency your guide will do everything possible to provide you with prompt
medical attention.
- Telephone
#s while in Italy:
- 118
= medical emergency
- 112
= police
- 113
= general emergency
- For
a list of English-speaking doctors in Italy, contact the Association for Medical
Assistance to Travelers, IAMAT (716) 754-4883.
PASSPORTS
- Dolce
Vita Adventures must have a xerox copy of the photo page of your passport before
departure.
- It
is wise to make a copy for yourself as well, and keep it in your luggage (since
the original passport is safely tucked in your money belton you.)
- Your passport
needs to be valid for up to 6 months after return to the US. You will not need
visas or shots.
- If
you do not have a passport please begin the process ASAP, as it may take 6 weeks
or more.
MONEY
 |
- Banking
hours in Italy are lethargic, so it's advisable to change a little money into
"Euro" either before departure or upon arrival in Rome.
- Local ATMs
are everywhere. They are easy and convenient (with English directions) and usually
give a better exchange rate than the kiosks. Your ATM card is valid in Italy if
it has a Cirrus or a Plus symbol on the back and you have your 4 digit access
code. The ATM withdraws only from your checking account (not savings, and it will
not handle transfers.) Make sure your bank "unlocks/opens" your card
for overseas cash withdrawal as some are "locked" for fraud prevention.
Notify your bank and your credit card that you will be using them overseas.
- Visa,
then American Express, is the most commonly accepted credit card. However, cash
is best for "negotiating" prices. Traveler's checks are sometimes troublesome.
- A money
belt for your passport, ATM card, Visa and a little cash is strongly recommended.
Safety and peace of mind = a good time.
- Don't
forget about the VAT tax refundspend a certain amount of Euro (100-150)
at the same store and get a tax refund at the airport customs counter (item must
be "unused," so just put the necklace back in the box for a few minutes.)
REFUNDS
- Please
take into consideration the cost Dolce Vita Adventures incurs even before our
adventures begin.
- Cancellations
90 days or more prior to departure will receive a full refund of paid balance
minus the registration fee.
- Cancellations
60 to 89 days prior to departure will receive 75% refund of paid balance minus
the registration fee.
- Cancellations
45 to 60 days prior to departure will receive 50% refund of paid balance minus
the registration fee.
- Cancellations
44 days prior to departure will receive no refund.
- Every
attempt will be made to replace your cancellation with a traveler on the waiting
list. In that case, your money will be fully refunded minus the registration fee.
